About the Museum
Madrid is the heart of Spain, and the Prado Museum is its soul. Here are preserved masterpieces that have inspired artists, poets, and dreamers for centuries.
Almost all paintings in the museum’s collection were purchased by Spanish monarchs or gifted to them. For example, Philip II adored Titian, while Philip IV favored Velázquez.

For centuries, the Habsburgs and Bourbons collected the greatest masterpieces in the world, which is why the Prado’s collection is now one of the richest in Europe.

Interestingly, the building was originally planned as a scientific institute, but Queen Maria Isabella of Braganza insisted on creating an art gallery.

The Prado Museum officially opened on November 19, 1819.
