About the Museum
Madrid is the heart of Spain, and the Prado Museum is its soul. Here are preserved masterpieces that have inspired artists, poets, and dreamers for centuries.
Almost all paintings in the museum’s collection were purchased by Spanish monarchs or gifted to them. For example, Philip II adored Titian, while Philip IV favored Velázquez.

For centuries, the Habsburgs and Bourbons collected the greatest masterpieces in the world, which is why the Prado’s collection is now one of the richest in Europe.

Interestingly, the building was originally planned as a scientific institute, but Queen Maria Isabella of Braganza insisted on creating an art gallery.

The Prado Museum officially opened on November 19, 1819.

During the Tour, You Will See:

  • “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Bosch – a mystical painting once kept in Philip II’s private chapel.
  • “Las Meninas” by Velázquez – an intriguing portrait of the royal family filled with mysteries.
  • “The Third of May 1808” by Goya – a masterpiece depicting the courage of the Spanish people during wartime.
  • And many other incredible works by Europe’s greatest artists.

During the Napoleonic Wars, many paintings were saved thanks to secret transports across Spain; some even traveled beyond the country’s borders.

Professional licensed guides — historians and art experts — conduct the tours. The Prado Museum tour is perfect for art lovers and anyone wishing to feel the spirit and history of Madrid.
